The Science of Racing Fuels

There’s no more appropriate term for the Sasol GTC Championship than the “laboratory on wheels” as it is the perfect testing ground for high performance fuels. But it’s not just about the thrill of the race, behind the scenes Sasol is proactively researching innovative solutions that will help usher in the next generation of more efficient and powerful fuels. Their goal is to take the competitive spirit of wanting to be the best on the track and applying that philosophy to the science in their laboratories.

In 2009 Sasol opened the Fuels Application Centre at Capricorn Park in Cape Town. The centre is one of the few such test facilities in the world and the first of its kind in southern Africa. The Centre was built to complement the existing research and development centre we have in Sasolburg. Both facilities are equipped with sophisticated test technology enabling us to conduct R&D and continuously test and analyse our products.

This state-of-the-art fuel research facility boasts a host of test cells that are used to research Sasol’s range of synthetic and crude-oil-derived fuels. Using some of the most advanced engine testing and emissions measurement technologies, the facility’s research teams are passionate about finding ways to make fuels more efficient whilst delivering improved performance.

The same knowledge and expertise which is gained through the development of our racing fuels is transferred to the development of Sasol Turbo Fuels™ PLUS 93 & 95 octane. Which, you as the consumer benefits directly through the innovation and continuous product development linked to our motorsport programme.

This research and development and testing enables us to improve engine power and reliability and improve fuel economy.

So when you fill up with Sasol, whether you are racing on the track or driving the kids to school, rest assured that Sasol’s scientists have helped you get more out of each drop of fuel and will continue to do so.

Follow the Sasol GTC Championship to watch some of South Africa’s best drivers put Sasol fuels to the test.
